Explanation

A verb (глагол) names an action and answers «что делать? что сделать?» (infinitive) or «что делает?». A verb changes by tense: «читаю — читал — буду читать». In the past tense it changes by gender and number: «он читал, она читала, оно читало, они читали». In the present and future it changes by person: «я читаю, ты читаешь, они читают». «Не» is written apart from verbs: «не знаю». «-ться» and «-тся»: «что делать?» — «учиться», «что делает?» — «учится». Verbs of motion: «идти» (on foot, one direction) — «ходить» (repeated), «ехать» — «ездить».

Worked examples
“Наш день” (Our day). «Утром я встаю и иду в школу. Мы ездим туда на автобусе, а Дима ходит пешком. Вчера мы писали диктант. Завтра будем читать рассказ. Улицу нужно переходить по переходу на зелёный свет, и мы всегда так делаем.» (In the morning I get up and go to school. We go there by bus, but Dima walks. Yesterday we wrote a dictation. Tomorrow we will read a story. You must cross the street at the crossing on the green light, and we always do so.)
Models: «Что делать? — учиться. Что делает? — учится»; «я не знаю»; «она пошла, они пошли»; «я пойду, я поеду».
Class activity

“Time travel”. For one verb («писать») pupils take turns making sentences in the three tenses: «писал», «пишу», «буду писать».

Practice
1
Write «читать» in the past in four forms.
2
Write «писать» in the present with «я» and «они».
3
Spell correctly: «Он учи... в школе».
4
Why do we say both «Я иду в школу» and «Я хожу в школу каждый день»?
