Explanation

Mini-text: “Mahmud Kashgari was a great linguist who lived in the 11th century. He wrote a work called «Devonu lug‘otit turk». This book is an ancient dictionary of the Turkic languages, containing word explanations and examples. The work is still regarded as a valuable source for linguists.” Working on the text: pick out the historical fact (11th century), explain the words «lug‘at» and «tilshunos», make an outline: 1) the scholar, 2) the work, 3) its importance. Main idea: dictionaries of the past have preserved the history of our language.

Worked examples
A tilshunos is a scholar who studies language.
A source — a work or document from which information is taken.
Class activity

Exact questions: in groups make five questions on the text (who, when, what, where, why) and pass them to another group.

Practice
1
In which century did Mahmud Kashgari live?
2
What kind of work is «Devonu lug‘otit turk»?
3
Who is a «tilshunos»?
4
What is the main idea?
