Explanation

School subjects are divided into exact and social-humanitarian ones; mathematics, physics and chemistry are exact sciences. Scientific terms appear in two ways. The first: an ordinary word of everyday language starts to be used in a narrower, precise meaning in science; for example, «to‘plam» (set), «yig‘indi» (sum), «kuch» (force), «tezlik» (speed) have special meanings in mathematics and physics. The second: a term is taken from another language: algebra, molekula, atom. In mathematics you meet yig‘indi, ayirma, ko‘paytma, bo‘linma, kasr, burchak; in physics kuch, tezlik, massa; in chemistry modda, kislorod. For example, uchburchak (triangle) is a figure with three sides and three angles.

Worked examples
To‘plam and yig‘indi — ordinary words, but terms in mathematics.
Algebra and molekula — terms taken from other languages.
Class activity

Make a list of ten terms from your mathematics textbook and divide them into columns “from native words” and “borrowed”.

Practice
1
In how many ways are scientific terms formed?
2
Give an example of a term taken from the common language.
3
Write two terms borrowed from other languages.
4
What is a triangle?
