Pronunciation and spelling of Q and G‘
Textbook: pp. 74–75
GoalKnow how Q and G‘ are written at the end of words and with suffixes.
New words
leaf · yaproqspoon · qoshiqdative case · jo‘nalish kelishigipossession · egalik
Explanation
At the end of a word voiced g‘ also sounds like q, but in writing each word keeps its own letter: tog‘ (mountain), yaproq (leaf). When the dative case is added to a word ending in q, the suffix is said and written -qa: qoshiq — qoshiqqa (spoon — to the spoon), o‘yinchoq — o‘yinchoqqa (toy — to the toy). When a possessive suffix is added to such a word, the final q turns into g‘: yaproq — yaprog‘i, o‘yinchoq — o‘yinchog‘im. When the dative is added to a word ending in g‘, nothing changes: tog‘ — tog‘ga, sog‘ — sog‘ga.
Worked examples
Tayoq — tayoqqa (to the stick), tayog‘i (his/her stick).
Tog‘ — tog‘ga: neither the stem nor the suffix changes.
