Explanation

When working with a text we first read it carefully and then must be able to state the main idea in a sentence or two. If we meet an unknown word, we look in an explanatory dictionary, which lists its meanings with numbers. For example, “tafakkur” means both the ability to think and the process of thinking. To choose a title we must find the most important idea of the text. When retelling we keep the order of events and use our own words. A person who reads a lot has rich, fluent speech; therefore culture of speech is formed from childhood.

Worked examples
Mini-text: “Books and language.” A pupil who reads twenty minutes every day learns new words without noticing. He or she begins to express thoughts clearly and well. So a book is a teacher of speech. Main idea: reading enriches speech.
Dictionary entry: tafakkur – 1) the ability to think; 2) the process of thinking. Sentence: A good book develops thinking.
Class activity

“Meaning hunters”: each pair finds one word in the explanatory dictionary, reads its meanings and makes a sentence; others judge whether the meaning is used correctly.
