Explanation

In the extract Mulla Fazliddin goes to the office of the dorug‘a (head of the city guard) and complains that his chest has been robbed. The dorug‘a, however, is preoccupied with guarding the city from the approaching enemy, so he blames the matter on thieves from the thickets. The mulla says he suspects someone else: Ahmad Tanbal had wanted him to paint a picture and had grown angry when refused. The dorug‘a reminds him that Ahmadbek is of royal descent and related to the ruler’s family, and says he left for the capital that very morning. The mulla grows anxious about what will happen if the pictures in the chest have fallen into that bek’s hands. The text has old words (dorug‘a, tarh, yog‘iy, azon); sort them into those no longer used and those replaced by other words, and find words typical of artistic style.
