Explanation

The genitive plural (after «нет кого? чего?»): masculine nouns after a hard consonant take «-ов»: «столы — нет столов, костюмы — костюмов, учебники — учебников»; nouns ending in «й» take «-ев»: «герои — героев»; after «ь, ж, ч, ш, щ» it is «-ей»: «календари — календарей, карандаши — карандашей, ножи — ножей». Feminine and neuter nouns usually have a zero ending: «книги — нет книг, парты — парт, окна — окон, места — мест, яблоки — яблок». Nouns in «-ь» take «-ей»: «тетради — тетрадей». «-ия, -ие» give «-ий»: «фотографии — фотографий, стихотворения — стихотворений». Sometimes a vowel appears: «сказки — сказок, девушки — девушек, песни — песен, письма — писем». Special: «друзья — друзей, братья — братьев, сыновья — сыновей, дети — детей, люди — людей».
