Explanation
Vitaly Valentinovich Bianki (1894–1959) was a Russian writer, a master of stories about nature and animals. In «Первая охота» a puppy, bored of chasing hens in the yard, goes hunting for the first time. The bittern (выпь) becomes invisible among the reeds, the hoopoe (удод) presses itself to the ground and looks like a colourful rag, the lizard leaves its tail behind and escapes under a stone, and the insects hide. In the end the bombardier beetle (жук-бомбардир) squirts a burning liquid at the puppy's nose, and he runs home in fright. The story shows that every creature has its own way of defending itself.

«Первая охота» (a short retelling). «Щенку надоело гонять кур, и он пошёл на охоту. Выпь спряталась в камыше, и щенок её не увидел. Удод прижался к земле, и щенок его не узнал. Ящерица оставила хвост и убежала под камень. Жук-бомбардир брызнул щенку в нос едкой струйкой. Щенок испугался и убежал домой.» (The puppy got bored of chasing hens and went hunting. The bittern hid in the reeds and the puppy could not see it. The hoopoe pressed itself to the ground and the puppy did not recognise it. The lizard left its tail and ran under a stone.
