Textbook: Part 4, pp. 65–67
GoalSpelling of verb-forming suffixes (2): how the past-tense suffixes -gan, -kan, -qan are written.
New words
past tense · o‘tgan zamonpast-tense suffix · -ganpast-tense suffix after k · -kanpast-tense suffix after q · -qan
Explanation
The suffixes -gan, -kan, -qan are added to a verb base to form a past-tense verb and show that an action has been done. If the verb base ends in k, -kan is written: ek – ekkan, chek – chekkan. If the base ends in q, -qan is written: chiq – chiqqan, oq – oqqan. After other sounds -gan is written: kel – kelgan, yoz – yozgan, yog‘ – yog‘gan, o‘qi – o‘qigan.
Worked examples
Bobom daraxt ekkan. Opam ko‘ylak tikkan. (Grandfather planted a tree. My sister sewed a dress.)
Mehmonlar chiqqan. Qor yog‘gan. Bola yozgan. (The guests have gone out. It has snowed. The child has written.)
