Explanation

Direct speech gives the speaker's words unchanged; it begins with a capital letter and is put in quotation marks. Schemes: «А: “П”.» («Он сказал: “Идём”.»); «“П”, — а.» («“Идём”, — сказал он.»); «“П, — а, — п”» («“Идём, — сказал он, — уже поздно”.»). When the author's words come last, the verb comes first: «— сказал он». A question or exclamation mark stays inside the quotation: «“Ты придёшь?” — спросил он.» Indirect speech gives the words from the author's point of view with changes; it is a complex sentence with an explanatory clause. Personal pronouns and verb persons change and the address becomes an object. A statement uses «что» or «будто»: «Он сказал: “Я приду вечером”» → «Он сказал, что придёт вечером». A request or command uses «чтобы»: «Мама попросила: “Сынок, позвони бабушке”» → «Мама попросила сына, чтобы он позвонил бабушке». A special question uses the question word: «Он спросил: “Где библиотека?”» → «Он спросил, где библиотека». A general question uses «ли»: «Она спросила: “Ты придёшь?”» → «Она спросила, приду ли я». A quotation can be given as direct speech or as part of a sentence: «Автор статьи пишет, что реки — «артерии страны»».

Worked examples
«Брат сообщил: “Я нашёл твой телефон”» → «Брат сообщил, что нашёл мой телефон». «Тренер сказал нам: “Вы хорошо играли”» → «Тренер сказал нам, что мы хорошо играли».
«Врач спросил: “Вы давно кашляете?”» → «Врач спросил, давно ли я кашляю». «Командир приказал: “Идите вперёд!”» → «Командир приказал, чтобы мы шли вперёд».
