Explanation
An attributive clause defines a noun in the main clause, answers «какой? какая? какое? какие?» and always stands after the word it defines: «Книга, которую я взял в библиотеке, оказалась интересной». It is joined by the conjunctive words «который, какой, чей, кто, что, где, куда, откуда, когда». The commonest is «который»: it agrees with the defined word in gender and number, and its case depends on its role in the clause: «девочка (feminine, singular), у которой (genitive) я взял словарь». In the clause «который» may be the subject, an object or an adverbial. The main clause may contain the demonstratives «такой, тот»: «Есть такой друг, который никогда не опаздывает». «Чей» most often refers to an animate noun: «человек, чей голос знает вся страна», but it can also refer to an inanimate one: «страна, чья история насчитывает тысячи лет». The phrases «тот, кто» and «то, что» are also used. In a scheme the clause is in round brackets and the main clause in square brackets: «[дом, (в котором ...), ...]». If the clause stands inside the main clause, it is set off by commas on both sides.
Worked examples
«Дом, в котором мы живём, построен давно» — «который» is masculine singular like «дом», and prepositional in the clause: «[дом, (в котором ...), ...]».
«Это человек, чей голос знает вся страна»; «Есть такой друг, который никогда не опаздывает» — the demonstrative «такой»; «Девочка, у которой я взял словарь, учится в параллельном классе».

в котором; которой; которые
2
Join the two sentences: «Я встретил учителя. Он преподавал нам физику».
Я встретил учителя, который преподавал нам физику.
3
Draw the scheme: «Дом, в котором мы живём, построен давно».
[дом, (в котором ...), ...]
4
Why does «который» in «девочка, у которой» match the antecedent in gender but have a different case?
Gender and number come from the antecedent (feminine singular), while the case is set by its role in the clause: «у которой» is genitive after «у».
