The object

The «дополнение» (object) names an object and answers the oblique-case questions («кого? чего? кому? чему? кем? чем? о ком? о чём?»): «Бабушка рассказала о детстве». It may be a noun, a pronoun, a substantivised adjective or participle, or an infinitive: «Учитель попросил нас помолчать». A direct object belongs to a transitive verb and stands in the accusative without a preposition: «Брат починил велосипед». All other objects, including those with prepositions, are indirect: «Он гордится успехами». A direct object may stand in the genitive: after a negated transitive verb, especially with «никто, никогда, никакой» («Никто не принёс бумаги»), and when the action covers only part of the object («Отрежь мне хлеба» — a little). A definite object, an animate noun or a personal name keeps the accusative even after a negation: «Я не видел твою сестру». Set-off objects introduced by «кроме, помимо, наряду с, за исключением, вместо» are separated by commas: «Все, кроме Али, успели».
