The asyndetic complex sentence

In an asyndetic complex sentence the parts are joined without a conjunction, only by meaning and intonation. The punctuation between the parts depends on the meaning. 1) For an enumeration of events a comma is used (a semicolon if the parts contain commas): «Заиграла музыка, зажглись огни, все поднялись». Imperfective verbs show simultaneity and perfective verbs sequence: «Шумел ветер, шелестели листья». Such a sentence can be replaced by one with «и». 2) If the second part explains, supplements or gives the reason for the first, a colon is used: «Я понял: он не придёт» («…, что …»); «Мы не вышли: шёл сильный дождь» («…, потому что …»). 3) If the parts express time, condition, result, contrast, comparison or a quick change of events, a dash is used: «Постучишься — откроют» (condition), «Солнце село — стало прохладно» (time/result), «Брат любит футбол — сестра предпочитает теннис» (contrast), «Мигнул свет — и всё стихло» (quick change). They can be replaced by sentences with «если, когда, поэтому, а».
