СПП with explanatory clauses
Textbook: pp. 69–72
GoalFind explanatory subordinate clauses, identify them by their conjunctions and conjunctive words («что, чтобы, будто, ли»; «кто, что, где, когда, почему»), tell «что» from «чтобы» and draw schemes.
New words
сложноподчинённое предложение (complex sentence with a subordinate clause) · сложноподчинённое предложение (ergash gapli qo‘shma gap)придаточное изъяснительное (explanatory clause) · придаточное изъяснительное (izohlovchi ergash gap)союзное слово (conjunctive word) · союзное слово (bog‘lovchi so‘z)указательное слово (demonstrative word) · указательное слово (ko‘rsatish so‘zi)
Explanation
A complex sentence («СПП») has a main clause and a subordinate clause that depends on it. An explanatory clause answers the oblique-case questions and belongs to a word in the main clause (often the predicate) that needs further explanation; it usually follows the main clause: «Тренер сказал, что матч начнётся в шесть». It is joined by the conjunctions «что, чтобы, будто, ли» or by the conjunctive words «кто, что, какой, где, когда, почему, как». The main clause sometimes has a demonstrative «то»: «Он рассказал о том, как нашёл дорогу». A conjunctive word is a part of the clause and may change by case («Мы поняли, чем он занят»). A clause with «что» gives information or an attitude to it («Врач сказал, что нужно больше отдыхать»; «Я рад, что мы встретились»). A clause with «чтобы» expresses a wish, request, demand or inducement to act: «Мы хотим, чтобы матч состоялся». «Ли» stands after the first word of the clause and gives a meaning of question or doubt: «Я не знаю, придёт ли он». Scheme: «[выяснили], (где …)». The subordinate clause is separated from the main one by a comma.
Worked examples
«Мы выяснили (что?), где находится стадион» — [выяснили], (где ...). «Он рассказал (о чём?) о том, как нашёл дорогу» — [рассказал о том], (как ...).
«Учитель потребовал, чтобы все пришли вовремя» — a demand: «чтобы». «Врач сообщил, что анализы в порядке» — information: «что». «Я не знаю, придёт ли он» — doubt: «ли».
Class activity
“Что or чтобы?”. The teacher says a main clause («Я мечтаю…», «Я знаю…», «Он попросил…»); students add a clause with the right conjunction and give the reason.
Practice
1
2
Join the two sentences with «ли»: «Я не знаю.
3
Put the question and draw the scheme: «
4
Why can «что» not be used in «Я хочу, чтобы ты пришёл»?
«Хотеть» expresses a wish, and wishes and inducements take «чтобы»; «что» is for information.
