Complex sentences with clauses of place

A clause of place shows where an action takes place and answers «где? куда? откуда?». It is joined to the main clause by the conjunctive words «где, куда, откуда». The main clause may have the demonstratives «там, туда, оттуда» or adverbs such as «везде, всюду, повсюду, справа, слева, впереди, наверху»; if there is a demonstrative, the clause always follows it. The order of parts is free: «Мы сели там, где было тихо» — [там], (где ...); «Где растёт камыш, там водятся утки» — (где ...), [там ...]; «Там, где начинается тропа, стоит указатель» — [там, (где ...), ...]. The choice of demonstrative depends on the verb of the main clause, and the choice of conjunctive word on the verb of the subordinate clause: «Он поехал туда (куда?), где (где?) жила бабушка» — «туда» shows direction, «где» the place in the clause. A «где» clause differs from a clause of place if it defines a noun (attributive: «Это двор, где мы играли») or has the meaning of a question (explanatory: «Он спросил, где свободно»).
