Agreement of the predicate with the subject
Textbook: pp. 15–18
GoalApply the rules of agreement of the predicate with the subject: with quantity words, collective nouns, abbreviations, foreign indeclinable nouns and the pronouns «кто/что».
New words
согласование (agreement) · согласование (moslashuv)собирательное существительное (collective noun) · собирательное существительное (jamlovchi ot)несклоняемое слово (indeclinable word) · несклоняемое слово (turlanmaydigan so‘z)сложносокращённое слово (compound abbreviation) · сложносокращённое слово (qisqartma so‘z)
Explanation
The predicate agrees with the subject in person and number in the present and future, and in gender and number in the past tense and the conditional: «Я читаю», «Наступило утро». When the subject is a quantity word such as «много, мало, немного, немало», the predicate is usually singular and (in the past) neuter: «На стадионе собралось много болельщиков». A collective noun («молодёжь, листва, студенчество») also takes a singular predicate: «Молодёжь выбрала новый маршрут». With an indeclinable abbreviation the predicate takes the gender of the main word of the full name: «ТЭЦ» is «теплоэлектроцентраль» (feminine), so «ТЭЦ заработала»; «ООН» is «организация», so «ООН приняла резолюцию». With a foreign indeclinable noun for a lifeless object the predicate is neuter: «Метро открылось»; the exception is «кофе», which is masculine: «Кофе остыл». A subject expressed by «кто» (also «кто-то, никто, кто-нибудь») takes a masculine predicate: «Кто пришёл?», «Никто не опоздал»; with «что» and its derivatives the predicate is neuter: «Что-то блеснуло».
Worked examples
«Мало участников дошло до финала» — «мало» + noun, predicate singular and neuter. «Студенчество отметило праздник» — a collective noun, singular.
«ГЭС (гидроэлектростанция) дала ток» — the predicate is feminine. «Интервью записано» — neuter. «Что-нибудь случилось?» — neuter.
Class activity
“Pick the right form”. Subjects on the board: «много ребят, молодёжь, ТЭЦ, кофе, кто-то». Teams race to give the right past-tense predicate and state the rule.
Practice
1
Choose the right form: «Мало времени (осталось/остались) до звонка», «Что-нибудь (случилось/случился)?», «Метро (открылся/открылось) рано».
осталось; случилось; открылось
2
Put the predicate in the right form: «Молодёжь (принять) участие в акции», «ТЭЦ (дать) ток», «Никто не (опоздать)».
приняла; дала; опоздал
3
Which is correct: «Кофе остыл» or «Кофе остыло»? Why?
«Кофе остыл»: «кофе» is an indeclinable foreign noun but it is masculine (an exception).
4
Why is the predicate feminine in «ООН приняла резолюцию»?
The abbreviation does not decline, so the gender follows the main word of the full name: «организация» is feminine.
