Parenthetical words, phrases and sentences
Textbook: pp. 61–64
GoalFind parenthetical words, phrases and sentences, know their meaning groups, punctuate them correctly and tell them from words that are not parenthetical.
New words
вводное слово (parenthetical word) · вводное слово (kiritma so‘z)вводное предложение (parenthetical sentence) · вводное предложение (kiritma gap)отношение говорящего (the speaker's attitude) · отношение говорящего (so‘zlovchining munosabati)источник сообщения (source of information) · источник сообщения (xabar manbai)
Explanation
Parenthetical words, phrases and sentences are not grammatically connected to any part of the sentence; they express the speaker's attitude to what is said. The sentence stays intact if they are removed: «Он, к счастью, успел». By meaning they show the order of thought («во-первых, во-вторых, итак, следовательно, таким образом»), the degree of certainty («конечно, действительно, несомненно, бесспорно, может быть, кажется»), feelings («к счастью, к сожалению, к удивлению, на беду»), the source of information («по-моему, по словам учителя, говорят, на мой взгляд») and the manner of expressing the thought («одним словом, короче говоря, по правде говоря, так сказать»). In speech they are said with a lowered voice and a faster tempo; in writing words and phrases are set off by commas, and parenthetical sentences by commas or dashes (or brackets): «Этот фильм, как говорят критики, очень хорош»; «Новая книга — я это знаю — уже в библиотеке». Some words may or may not be parenthetical: «Может быть, он придёт» (parenthetical) — «Он может быть свободен» (predicate); «Значит, мы опоздали» (parenthetical) — «Это слово значит “дом”» (verb). «Вдруг, даже, только, именно, как будто, почти» are not parenthetical.
Worked examples
«К счастью, дождь скоро закончился» (feeling). «Он, по-моему, прав» (source/opinion). «Во-первых, нужно подготовиться, а во-вторых, не опаздывать» (order).
Parenthetical sentences: «Этот фильм, как говорят критики, лучший в году». «Гости — я не сомневаюсь — придут вовремя». Not parenthetical: «Вдруг погас свет» — «вдруг» is an adverb.
Class activity
“Remove and check”. Delete the parenthetical word and check that the sentence is intact; then name its meaning group and add the commas.
Practice
1
Add commas: «К счастью дождь скоро закончился». «Он по-моему прав».
К счастью, дождь скоро закончился. Он, по-моему, прав.
2
Name the meaning group: «во-первых», «конечно», «к радости», «по словам учителя».
order of thought; certainty; feeling; source of information
3
In which sentence is «может быть» parenthetical: «Может быть, он придёт» or «Он может быть свободен после обеда»?
In the first (it expresses supposition); in the second «может быть» is part of the predicate.
4
Why is no comma needed in «Вдруг погас свет»?
«Вдруг» is an adverb, not a parenthetical word; it modifies the predicate «погас» and does not express the speaker's attitude.
