Explanation

A simple sentence has one grammatical base: the «подлежащее» (subject) and the «сказуемое» (predicate) are its main parts. A sentence is extended («распространённое») if it has secondary parts and unextended («нераспространённое») if it does not. The subject is a noun or pronoun in the nominative («Ветер стих», «Мы вернулись»), or a substantivised adjective or participle («Дежурные вышли»), a numeral («Двое остались»), an infinitive («Рисовать — моё хобби») or a phrase («Группа туристов поднялась на перевал»). The predicate is of three kinds. The «простое глагольное» is a single verb in the indicative, imperative or conditional: «Дети поют». The «составное глагольное» has two verbs: the first is conjugated («начать, хотеть, уметь, стараться»), the second is an infinitive: «Мы решили участвовать». The «составное именное» consists of a linking verb and a nominal part: «Брат стал врачом». In the present tense the link is usually dropped: «Отец — инженер»; the nominal part may be a noun, an adjective, a short passive participle or an adverb.

Worked examples
«На рассвете над озером поднялся лёгкий туман». Base: «туман поднялся» (subject — noun, predicate — simple verbal); the sentence is extended.
«Наш тренер умеет работать с новичками» — predicate «умеет работать» (compound verbal). «Матч был напряжённым» — predicate «был напряжённым» (compound nominal; nominal part — adjective in the instrumental). «Игра закончена» — a short passive participle as the nominal part.
Class activity

“Find the base”. The teacher reads long sentences; students quickly name the subject and the predicate and show the kind of predicate (by fingers: 1 — simple, 2 — compound verbal, 3 — compound nominal).

Practice
1
Find the grammatical base: «Вечером в актовом зале начался школьный концерт». What kind of predicate is it?
2
Say how the subject is expressed: «Дежурные раздали тетради», «Читать вслух полезно», «Двое остались», «Они спорили».
3
Name the kind of predicate: «Закрой окно», «Мы решили участвовать в конкурсе», «Отец — инженер», «Брат стал известным музыкантом».
4
Why is the predicate in «Она хочет учиться» not simple verbal?
