The set-off attribute
Textbook: pp. 26–29
GoalFind set-off attributes and punctuate them correctly (participial phrase, adjective phrase, several single attributes, an attribute referring to a personal pronoun).
Parts of a sentence that are singled out by meaning and intonation are called set off («обособленные»); in speech they are marked by a pause and a rise of the voice, in writing by commas. An attribute is set off in three cases. First, when it is a participial phrase or an adjective with dependent words and stands after the defined word: «Ребята, вернувшиеся с похода, устали»; «Гора, покрытая снегом, видна издалека». Second, when two or more single attributes stand after the defined word: «Лес, тихий и тёмный, окружил нас». Third, when the attribute refers to a personal pronoun (it may come before or after it): «Довольные результатом, мы пошли домой»; «Он, смелый и добрый, помогал всем». A set-off attribute is separated by commas on both sides, less often by dashes. If a participial phrase stands before the defined word, it is not set off: «Покрытая снегом гора видна издалека».
Worked examples
«Река, разлившаяся после дождя, затопила луг» — the participial phrase is after the defined word: commas on both sides. «Разлившаяся после дождя река затопила луг» — it is before, so no commas.
«Бегуны, уставшие и мокрые, пересекли финишную линию» — two single attributes after the defined word. «Мокрые и счастливые, они обнялись» — an attribute referring to a pronoun.
Class activity
“Comma master”. The teacher shows sentences without commas; students raise a hand and say “comma / no comma” and name the rule (participial phrase, two single attributes, pronoun).
Practice
1
Punctuate: «Ребята вернувшиеся с похода рассказывали о маршруте».
Ребята, вернувшиеся с похода, рассказывали о маршруте.
2
Punctuate: «Усталые и довольные они вернулись домой».
Усталые и довольные, они вернулись домой.
3
Why are there no commas in «Сорванный ветром лист упал на крыльцо»?
The participial phrase stands before the defined word «лист», and such a phrase is not set off.
4
Replace the words in brackets with a participial phrase: «Учёные (изучают климат) предупреждают о засухе».
