The complex sentence. The compound sentence (ССП)
Textbook: pp. 65–68
GoalTell the kinds of complex sentences apart (compound, with a subordinate clause, asyndetic), find the parts of a compound sentence by its conjunctions and distinguish it from a simple sentence with homogeneous predicates.
New words
сложное предложение (complex sentence) · сложное предложение (qo‘shma gap)сложносочинённое предложение (compound sentence) · сложносочинённое предложение (bog‘langan qo‘shma gap)сочинительный союз (coordinating conjunction) · сочинительный союз (tenglashtiruvchi bog‘lovchi)бессоюзное предложение (asyndetic sentence) · бессоюзное предложение (bog‘lovchisiz gap)
Explanation
A complex sentence consists of two or more simple sentences, each with its own grammatical base. If the parts are joined by a conjunction the sentence is «союзное»; if they are joined only by intonation it is «бессоюзное». Conjunctive sentences are of two kinds: «сложносочинённое» («ССП», compound) and «сложноподчинённое» («СПП», with a subordinate clause). In an «ССП» the parts do not depend on each other and are joined by coordinating conjunctions: joining («и, да, ни … ни, тоже, также»), opposing («а, но, да, однако, зато, же») and separating («или, либо, то … то, не то … не то»). The parts are usually separated by a comma: «Матч начался вовремя, и стадион замер». «А» shows a difference, «но» a mismatch; «зато» is used in a positive situation, «однако» in a neutral or negative one. An «ССП» must be told from a simple sentence with homogeneous predicates: «Дети играли во дворе и смеялись» — one subject, simple sentence, no comma; «Дети играли во дворе, и соседи улыбались» — two bases, with a comma. If the parts share a secondary part or a common subordinate clause, there is no comma before «и»: «В лесу стемнело и стало прохладно».
Worked examples
«Мы хотели поехать к морю, но билетов не было» — «но» shows a mismatch. «Брат любит чай, а сестра предпочитает кофе» — «а» shows a difference. Schemes: [ ], но [ ]; [ ], а [ ].
«Эта куртка не новая, зато тёплая» (positive). «Он очень старался, однако ничего не получилось» (negative). «То дождь шёл, то светило солнце» — separating «то … то».
Class activity
“One base or two?”. The teacher reads sentences; students count the bases, say whether the sentence is simple or compound and decide whether a comma is needed before «и».
Practice
1
Which is a compound sentence: «Дети играли во дворе и смеялись» or «Дети играли во дворе, и соседи улыбались»?
The second — it has two grammatical bases; the first is a simple sentence with homogeneous predicates.
2
Insert «а» or «но»: «Мы хотели поехать к морю, ... билетов не было», «Брат любит чай, ... сестра предпочитает кофе».
но; а
3
Insert «зато» or «однако»: «Эта куртка не новая, ... тёплая», «Он очень старался, ... ничего не получилось».
зато; однако
4
Add the comma and give the reason: «Утром было пасмурно а к вечеру прояснилось».
«Утром было пасмурно, а к вечеру прояснилось»: two grammatical bases, and a comma before the opposing «а».
