Spelling of verb-forming suffixes (1)
Adding -la, -lan, -lash, -sira, -illa (-ulla) to a base makes a new verb: toza – tozala (clean – to clean), yaxshi – yaxshilan (good – to get better), ko‘mak – ko‘maklash (help – to help each other), uyqu – uyqusira (sleep – to feel sleepy), taq – taqilla (tap – to tap), guv – guvulla (hum – to hum). These suffixes are written together with the base, without a hyphen. The apostrophe in the base stays: ta’rif + la = ta’rifla. If the base ends in l and the suffix begins with l, a double l is written: gul + la = gulla (to bloom).
“Spelling master”: children write the base and suffix, then join them correctly: ta’rif + lash → ta’riflash.
