Judging craft items by unity and wholeness of form
Teacher’s guide: p. 20
GoalLearn to judge by criteria whether the form of a craft item is coherent and whole.
If the form of an item is coherent, all its parts fit one another and serve one purpose. Wholeness means that the sum of the parts looks like one finished unit: no part feels extra or foreign. Before judging, criteria are set: harmony of form, proportion of parts, suitability of the material for the item’s purpose, quality of workmanship, placement of the pattern and ease of use. For judging, at least two items of one kind and equal size are taken and discussed openly and freely. Each student gives points by the criteria and writes a conclusion, so a mark must be backed by reasons. In class “I like it” is not enough: you must explain through a criterion why you like it.
Worked examples
Two carved boxes: on the first, the lid pattern repeats the pattern on the body; on the second, every side is different. The first is more coherent.
Item A: form 4, proportion 5, workmanship 3, pattern 4, ease of use 4 points — total 4 + 5 + 3 + 4 + 4 = 20. Item B totals 19: A is slightly higher, but the conclusion is written with reasons.
Class activity
“Judging panel”: the class judges two chosen items (or their pictures) by a criteria table. Each group announces its scores and gives a one-sentence reason. Sharp or breakable items are shown only in pictures.
Practice
1
What does coherence of an item’s form mean?
All parts fit each other and serve one purpose.
2
Name four assessment criteria.
For example: harmony of form, proportion, quality of workmanship, ease of use.
3
An item’s scores: form 5, proportion 4, workmanship 4, pattern 3, ease of use 5. What is the total?

Why is saying “I like it” not enough in judging?
Because a mark should be objective; with a criterion and reason others can understand and check it.
