Explanation

Production efficiency means reaching the best result with the least spending. There are two ways to develop production. In the extensive way production grows by adding more shops, sown areas and workers and gathering more material. In the intensive way the same result is reached by using better technology and equipment, organising work better, strengthening discipline and saving resources; today the main attention goes to the intensive way. Every enterprise operates on a plan: the plan includes the volume and time of output, the introduction of new equipment, raising labour productivity and improving staff skills. The cost price of a product is all expenses of making and selling one unit: raw material, wages, energy, wear of equipment (amortisation), repair, rent and others; cost price = total expenses : number of products. If an enterprise is profitable, that is, its revenue exceeds its expenses, part of the profit goes to the state budget as tax and the rest is used for the enterprise’s development (new equipment, wages, bonuses).

Worked examples
Extensive: a workshop gets a second machine and two more workers. Intensive: a new clamping fixture is used on the same machine to speed up work — the number of workers and machines does not change.
A workshop made 30 bookshelves in a month with total expenses of 1200000 so‘m. Cost price: 1200000 : 30 = 40000 so‘m. If the price is 50000 so‘m, each shelf gives 10000 so‘m profit.
Class activity

Cost-price table: groups estimate in so‘m the material, time and other costs for a small item (for example a paper box), find the total expenses and calculate the cost of one piece. Set a price above cost and state the profit.

Practice
1
State the difference between the extensive and intensive ways.
2
What is cost price and how is it calculated?
3
Total expenses are 900000 so‘m and 45 items were made. What is the cost price in so‘m?
4
Why is more attention given to the intensive way?
