Explanation

The aim of a study visit is to see for oneself the production technology, the thrift system and labour productivity at an enterprise near the school. The visit has three stages: preparing, carrying out and concluding. In preparing, the teacher chooses the enterprise, agrees with its management, fixes the route and safe walking paths, and gives students individual tasks, for example writing the order of processing one part (a route map), drawing a sketch, or comparing productivity of hand and machine work. In carrying out, there is a short introductory talk, then the group follows the process from the preparation shop to the assembly shop; workers are not disturbed, machines and tools are not touched, no one steps outside the marked line, protective equipment is worn and the instructions of the teacher and guide are strictly followed. In concluding, the notes are checked, a written report or talk is held and what was seen is compared with the school workshop. A visit to an enterprise is made only with the teacher and with permission; going in on your own is not allowed.

Worked examples
An individual task at a furniture factory: “Write the processing stages of a chair leg in order.” The student observes and writes 1) cutting, 2) turning, 3) sanding, 4) varnishing.
If 4 parts per hour are made by hand and 20 parts per hour on a machine, the machine is 20 : 4 = 5 times more productive.
Class activity

Visit sheet: the class fills in a sheet for an imaginary enterprise: what is produced, what raw material, which shops, which safety signs, what is being saved. A real visit only with the teacher.

Practice
1
Name the three stages of a study visit.
2
How should students behave at the enterprise? State three rules.
3
6 parts per hour are made by hand and 30 on a machine. How many times more productive is the machine?
4
Why are students given individual tasks before the visit?
