Mistakes and difficulties in choosing a career
Most mistakes in choosing a career come from a few causes. The first is dreaming at once of the highest post; in fact every master, engineer and manager started with ordinary work and grew step by step. The second is dividing occupations into “prestigious” and “not prestigious”; any honest work is needed by society and deserves respect. The third is following a path only because friends chose it; if interests and abilities match it is fine, otherwise one later has to change course. The fourth is blindly choosing the occupation of a person you admire; first find out the everyday conditions of that job — its hours, place, physical load and responsibility. The fifth is seeing only the attractive, visible side of a job: for example, thinking a vet is someone who just pets animals, while the work also includes treating sick animals, surgery and night call-outs. The sixth is equating a favourite school subject with a career: for a student who says “I love chemistry” there are many specific jobs — laboratory assistant, pharmacist, chemical technologist, ecologist — whose daily work differs sharply. The seventh is not knowing that the content of work has changed: today’s worker uses computers, programmed machine tools and digital instruments. The eighth is ignoring health and one’s own features: unsuitable conditions can harm health.
“Find the mistake”: the teacher reads five short situations (for example, “Anvar wants to be a journalist because appearing on TV is fun”). Groups identify which mistake each shows and suggest the right way.
