Making negative verbs from affirmative ones

Textbook: Part 4, pp. 49–50
GoalMake negative verbs from affirmative ones; negation in commands.
New words
command · buyruqnegative suffix · -mabase · asosmistake · xato
Explanation

To make a negative verb we add -ma to the verb stem: bordi – bormadi, aytdi – aytmadi, saqlaydi – saqlamaydi. -ma is added only once: we do not write “bormadimadi”. -ma is also used in commands: yoz – yozma (don’t write), yozing – yozmang. We compare a negative verb with the affirmative one in a sentence to check the meaning.

Worked examples
Dadam ishlayapti. – Dadam ishlamayapti. (Dad is working. – Dad is not working.)
Shovqin qil! – Shovqin qilma! (Make noise! – Don’t make noise!) Eshikni oching. – Eshikni ochmang. (Open the door. – Do not open the door.)
Class activity

In pairs: one child says 5 affirmative verbs, the other immediately gives the negative ones; then they swap roles.
