Consonants pronounced differently from how they are written
Textbook: Part 1, pp. 24–29
GoalCheck and spell consonants at the end of a word that sound different from how they are written; tell x from h.
New words
checking · tekshirishvoiced · jarangliroom · xonaharvest · hosil
Explanation
At the end of some words a voiced consonant is heard as its voiceless pair: kitob (book) is said like “kitop”. To check the spelling, add a vowel: kitob — kitobi. Now b is clear, so the word is written with b. The spelling of x and h has to be remembered: xona, xalq, xursand are written with x; hovli, halol, hosil with h.
Worked examples
dard (pain) is said like “dart”; check: dardi. So it is written dard (with d).
tog‘ (mountain) is said like “toq”; check: tog‘i. So it is written tog‘ (with g‘). Ovoz (voice) — ovozi, so ovoz (with z).
Class activity
“Add a vowel!”: the teacher says a word (“ovos”); children add a vowel to check it and write the correct spelling on the board.
Practice
