Sounds and letters
Textbook: Part 1, pp. 9–11
GoalTell a sound from a letter; count the sounds, letters and syllables in a word.
New words
sound · tovushletter · harfsyllable · bo‘g‘inletter combination · harf birikmasi
Explanation
A sound is spoken and heard; a letter is written and seen. Speech is made of sentences, sentences of words, and words of sounds and letters. Sometimes two letters stand for one sound: sh, ch, ng. These are letter combinations. A word has as many syllables as it has vowel sounds.
Worked examples
choynak (teapot): 6 sounds (ch, o, y, n, a, k), 7 letters, 2 syllables (choy-nak). “ch” is a letter combination.
shahar (city): 5 sounds (sh, a, h, a, r), 6 letters, 2 syllables (sha-har).
Class activity
“Sound collector”: the teacher says a word; children clap once per sound, then write the word and count its letters.
