Word-forming suffixes: grouping and analysis
Textbook: Part 2, pp. 60–62
GoalFind and analyse word-forming suffixes inside sentences; make many words from one base.
New words
analysis · tahliltable · jadvalconfidant · sirdoshreliable · ishonchli
Explanation
Many words can be made from one base: gul (flower) — gulchi (flower seller), gulli (flowery), gulsiz (flowerless), gulla (to bloom). Each has a different meaning. To analyse a word in a sentence we first find the base, then separate the word-forming suffix and ask a question: gulchi — Kim?, gulli — Qanday?, gulla — Nima qil? (to do what).
Worked examples
Gulchi gulli ko‘ylak kiydi. (The flower seller put on a flowery dress.) gulchi: gul + -chi (Kim?); gulli: gul + -li (Qanday?).
Ilmli bola sabrli bo‘ladi. (An educated child is patient.) ilmli: ilm + -li; sabrli: sabr + -li.
Class activity
“The longest chain”: a base is written on the board (ish). Teams take turns adding suffixes to make words: ishchi, ishla, ishsiz. The team with most words wins.
