Explanation
The main parts of a sentence are the subject (ega) and the predicate (kesim). The subject answers Kim? Nima? (Who? What?) and tells who or what the sentence is about. The predicate answers Nima qildi? Nima qiladi? Nima qilyapti? (What did / does / is doing?) and tells what is said about the subject. We underline the subject with one line and the predicate with two lines.
Worked examples
Dehqon dalada bug‘doy ekdi. (The farmer sowed wheat in the field.) Subject: dehqon (Kim?). Predicate: ekdi (Nima qildi?).
Mushukcha derazada uxlayapti. (The kitten is sleeping on the windowsill.) Subject: mushukcha (Nima?). Predicate: uxlayapti (Nima qilyapti?).
Class activity
“One line, two lines”: the teacher reads a sentence, children write it down and use two coloured pencils to underline the subject once and the predicate twice. Pairs check each other’s work.
