The numeral: proverbs and number phrases
Textbook: Part 4, pp. 13–14
GoalKnow how numerals link to nouns; find numerals in proverbs and word groups.
New words
proverb · maqolword group · birikmasalt · tuzthousand · ming
Explanation
A numeral links to a noun and forms a word group: ikki qo‘l (two hands), uchta olma (three apples), yigirma kishi (twenty people). After a numeral the noun stays singular. Both numerals and adjectives come before the noun, but a numeral answers Nechta? and an adjective Qanday?. Proverbs contain many numerals: “Bir kun tuz ichgan joyga qirq kun salom ber” (Greet for forty days the place where you ate salt for one day), “Ming eshitgandan bir ko‘rgan yaxshi” (Seeing once is better than hearing a thousand times).
Worked examples
uchta olma (Nechta?), qizil olma (Qanday?); yigirma kishi (Nechta?), mehribon kishi (Qanday?).
