Pronunciation and spelling of verbs

Textbook: Part 4, pp. 48–50
GoalCorrect pronunciation and spelling of verbs where speech and writing differ.
New words
pronunciation · talaffuzspelling · imloto fall · yiqilmoqto roll · yumalamoq
Explanation

Some verbs are pronounced differently from how they are written. In a negative verb, when -y follows the suffix -ma (kelmayman, o‘qimaysan), it often sounds like “-miy” in speech, but it is always written «-may»: kelmayman (I will not come), o‘qimayman (I will not read), aytmaydi (he does not tell). Also notice the meaning: yiqildi (fell, a person who was standing), yumaladi (rolled), quladi (collapsed, a tall thing came down).

Worked examples
Correct spelling: kelmayman, o‘qimayman, aytmaydi, olmaysan. Incorrect: kelmiyman, o‘qimiyman, aytmiydi.
The boy fell on the road. The ball rolled down the hill. The old wall collapsed.
Class activity

“How is it written?”: the teacher says a word the way it sounds in speech («kelmiyman»), children write it correctly on the board (kelmayman).
