Adjective-forming suffixes: -li, -dor, -siz
Textbook: Part 3, pp. 80–83
GoalFind adjectives made with -li, -dor, -siz and tell them from nouns made with noun-forming suffixes.
New words
resonant · jarangdoruseful · foydaliharmful · zararliwealthy · pulli
Explanation
We tell suffixes apart by the question. Sut + -chi = sutchi (milkman, Kim?) — a noun. Sut + -li = sutli (milky, Qanday?) — an adjective. Gul + -zor = gulzor (Nima?) — a noun, gul + -li = gulli (flowery, Qanday?) — an adjective. Spelling: when the base ends in -l and -li is added, two l’s are written: gul + li = gulli, pul + li = pulli.
Worked examples
jarangdor ovoz (ringing voice), foydali kitob, zararli odat (harmful habit), mazasiz sho‘rva (tasteless soup), gulli ko‘ylak (flowery dress).
Tuzsiz taom mazasiz bo‘ladi. (Unsalted food is tasteless.) Tuzsiz and mazasiz answer Qanday?, so they are adjectives.
Class activity
“Which kind?”: two words are written on the board (sutchi — sutli). Children ask the question and decide if each is a noun or an adjective.
