Indefinite-personal and impersonal sentences
Textbook: pp. 50–52
GoalFind indefinite-personal and impersonal sentences, recognise generalised sentences (proverbs) and replace a personal sentence by an impersonal one.
In an indefinite-personal sentence the predicate is a verb in the 3rd person plural of the present or future, or in the plural of the past, but who acts is unknown or unimportant: «В школе строят новый спортзал». «Говорят, завтра будет дождь». The focus is on the action. Definite-personal and indefinite-personal forms are also used with a generalised meaning — in proverbs: «Куй железо, пока горячо» (imperative, 2nd person), «Лес рубят — щепки летят» (3rd person plural). An impersonal sentence has no subject and cannot have one: the action or state arises independently of anyone's will. The predicate is an impersonal verb in the 3rd person singular (or neuter past): «светает, знобит, не спится»; a personal verb used impersonally («дует из окна», «лодку унесло течением»); a word like «нужно, можно, нельзя, тепло, весело»; or «нет, не было». In an impersonal sentence the person in the state is normally in the dative or accusative: «Мне холодно», «Меня укачало».
Worked examples
Indefinite-personal: «К нам вчера приходили гости», «На стадионе чистят поле». Generalised: «Лес рубят — щепки летят».
Impersonal: «Вечереет», «Мне не спится», «В классе тихо», «Нельзя шуметь», «Дождя не было», «Лодку унесло течением» (personal: «Течение унесло лодку»).
Class activity
“Who did it?”. The teacher reads sentences; students say “subject / no subject” and name the kind (indefinite-personal, impersonal).
