Объяснение

In Russian some nouns exist only in the singular: collective nouns («молодёжь, детвора, листва»), names of qualities («храбрость, терпение»), substances («молоко, мёд, золото, сахар») and many fruits and vegetables («капуста, картофель, виноград, малина»). Other nouns exist only in the plural: paired or two-part things («ножницы, брюки, очки, ворота, джинсы»), some foods («сливки, макароны, консервы, дрожжи»), periods of time («каникулы, сутки») and games («шахматы, прятки, шашки»). Adjectives and verbs agree with them: «большие ножницы», «зимние каникулы», «очки лежат». To speak about one item we say «пара брюк» (a pair of trousers).

Примеры
“В магазине” (In the shop). «Мама купила свежую капусту, сладкий виноград и макароны. Мне она взяла тёплые джинсы, а брату — шахматы. Скоро начнутся летние каникулы.» (Mum bought fresh cabbage, sweet grapes and pasta. She got me warm jeans and my brother a chess set. Summer holidays will begin soon.)
Table: singular only — «молоко, храбрость, золото, молодёжь»; plural only — «ножницы, шахматы, сливки, сутки».
Работа в классе

“Singular or plural?” The teacher says a noun («очки»). If it exists only in the plural, pupils raise two hands; if only in the singular, one hand.
