Explanation

The book has two folk stories: “The needle tree” (two brothers and a magic tree) and “The strange bird with two heads”. In both, selfishness leads to trouble and kindness leads to something good. Below is my own story on the same theme. Read it and answer the questions. To understand a story ask who, what and why, and say the moral in one sentence.

Worked examples
“The two neighbours”. Two neighbours had one well between their gardens. In summer the well was almost empty. Murod said, “I will take all the water for my roses.” His neighbour Karim said, “Let’s share it.” Murod laughed and took all the water, but his roses died in the heat because he forgot the other plants that gave shade. Later Karim brought him some water and said, “Let’s plant a tree together.” Murod felt sorry. Moral: if we share, everybody gains.
Mini-dialogue. — Why did Murod’s roses die? — He took all the water and forgot about the shade. — What did Karim do? — He was kind and helped him.
Class activity

“Moral theatre”: three pupils act out the story and the class says the moral in one sentence.

Practice
1
From the story: What did the two neighbours share?
2
Who felt sorry?
3
What did Karim suggest at the end?
4
Say the moral in your own words and explain it.
