What do my clothes say about me?
Textbook: p. 38
GoalDiscussing what clothes can tell us about a person’s tastes, age and culture; clothing styles.
New words
formal clothes · rasmiy kiyimcasual clothes · kundalik kiyimsports clothes · sport kiyimitaste · did, ta’b
Explanation
What we wear sends a message: it can show our age, our hobbies, what we like and where we come from. People wear formal clothes (a suit, a tie, a shirt) at work and at official meetings. We wear casual clothes (jeans, a T-shirt) every day; they are comfortable and cheap. Sports clothes are comfortable for movement. On national holidays we wear national costume: a duppi, an atlas dress, a chapan. Be careful: judging a person only by clothes is not always right. To give an opinion we can say I think: “I think he likes sports because he is wearing trainers.” There is a saying: “Good clothes open all doors”, but a person’s character is more important than their clothes.
Worked examples
On Navruz my sister wears a bright atlas dress and an embroidered duppi. At school she wears a plain uniform. At weekends she prefers casual jeans and a T-shirt.
— What do formal clothes say about a person? — I think he or she has an important job or an important meeting. — Do sports clothes say the same? — No, they say the person likes to move.
