Explanation
Describing a hobby: “My hobby is dangerous / expensive / quiet.” To say how long you have done it we use the Present Perfect with for or since. For gives the length of time: “I have had my guitar for two years.” Since gives the starting point: “I have played chess since 2021.” Question: “How long have you done this hobby?” How much time you spend: “I spend about three hours a week on it.” What you use: “I need a racket and some balls.” Agreeing: “So do I.” “Neither do I.” “I agree.” Disagreeing: “I don’t agree. It’s slow, but it makes you think.” Hobby adjectives: exciting, boring, safe, difficult.
Worked examples
My hobby is quiet and cheap. I have collected stamps for four years, since my uncle gave me his old album. I spend an hour a week on it. I use tweezers and a magnifying glass. I like it because it teaches me about other countries.
A: I think fishing is boring. B: I don’t agree. It’s slow, but it’s relaxing. A: How long have you done it? B: For two years, since my grandfather gave me a fishing rod.
Class activity
