You should take medicine.
Textbook: p. 18
GoalGiving advice for illnesses and injuries with should; treatment words.
New words
bandage · bintplaster · yelim plastirdrops · tomchi dorisee a doctor · qabulga bormoq
Explanation
Giving advice: “You should + base form.” Problem and advice pairs: “I have a cough. — You should drink hot tea with honey.” “I’ve scratched my hand. — You should wash it and put a plaster on it.” “My sister has earache. — She should see a doctor.” “My ankle hurts. — You should rest and put a bandage on it.” “My eye is sore. — You should use eye drops.” Treatment words: take an aspirin, use nose drops, have an injection. An important rule: we use medicine and drops only as an adult or a doctor says and only in the right amount; we never take other people’s medicine. For a deep cut or a broken bone tell an adult at once and see a doctor.
Worked examples
— I have a sore throat. — You should drink warm tea and stay in. — Should I take medicine? — Ask your mother or the doctor first.
Problem: Bobur has a bad cold. Advice: He should stay in bed, drink plenty of warm drinks and see the doctor if he gets a high temperature.
Class activity
“Doctor and patient”: a problem is written on a card (My ankle hurts); group members take turns giving advice with “You should ...”.
