Watching TV – is it good?

Textbook: p. 56
GoalTalking about television: kinds of programmes and TV history; Past Simple questions with When did ...?
New words
programme · dasturcartoon · multfilmchannel · kanalinvent · ixtiro qilmoq
Explanation

Kinds of programmes: scientific, educational, nature, sports, music, comedy, cartoon and news. Likes and reasons: “I like nature programmes because I learn about animals.” TV history: television was not made by one person but by many scientists. In 1884 Paul Nipkow of Germany made an early system for sending pictures; in the 1920s the Scot John Baird showed a working television system; black-and-white pictures later became colour. In 1969 hundreds of millions of people watched astronauts walk on the Moon from their homes. To ask about history we use the Past Simple: “When did colour TV appear?” — “It appeared in the 20th century.” Talk about pros and cons: a little TV is fine, but too much hurts our eyes and takes time from other activities.

Worked examples
Laziza watches TV for an hour a day. She likes educational and nature programmes because she learns English and about animals. She doesn’t like horror films. Her brother prefers sports channels.
— When did colour TV appear? — In the 20th century, but I don’t remember the year. — Who showed a working TV system in the 1920s? — John Baird, a Scottish inventor.
