GoalTalking about a past holiday with the Past Simple; questions and answers with did.
New words
holiday · ta’tilcamp · lagerweather · ob-havogo hiking · piyoda sayohat qilmoq
Explanation
We use the Past Simple to talk about a holiday that is finished. Regular verbs take -ed: visit – visited, walk – walked, play – played. Irregular verbs have their own forms: go – went, swim – swam, eat – ate, have – had, see – saw. For negatives we use didn’t + the base verb: “We didn’t go to the sea.” For questions we use Did + subject + base verb: “Did you like the camp?” — “Yes, I did.” / “No, I didn’t.” With question words: “Where did you go?”, “What did you do there?” For be we use was/were: “The weather was hot.”
Worked examples
Hi Sara! I spent two weeks at my uncle’s farm near Bukhara. The weather was very hot, so we got up early. I fed the chickens, picked apricots and swam in the canal. In the evenings we ate melon and played cards. I didn’t watch TV at all!
— Where did you go in July? — We went to a mountain village. — Did you like it? — Yes, I did. It was cool and quiet. — What did you do there? — We walked a lot and took photos.
Class activity
“Holiday report”: a pupil says three sentences about their holiday (one is false). Partners find the false one by asking did-questions.
Practice
1
Put the verb in the Past Simple: Last summer we ___ (visit) Samarkand.
Last summer we visited Samarkand.
2
Write the Past Simple of go, eat, see.
went, ate, saw
3
Make a question: you / swim / in the river (use did).
Did you swim in the river?
4
Why is “Did you went?” wrong?
After did we use the base form: Did you go? The past is already shown by did, so the verb stays in the base form.
