Explanation
In the past people often built a town next to a river or a spring because water is necessary for life. London stands on the River Thames and Tashkent is near the Chirchiq River. Water has four big uses: daily life (drink, cook, wash), health, agriculture (irrigation) and transport (ships and boats). We join a reason with because and a result with so: “People built the town near the river because they needed water.” “They needed water, so they built the town near the river.” After because we say the reason; after so we say the result. The saying “Water is life” means that nothing can live without water.
Worked examples
Farmers in the Fergana Valley use canals to take water to the cotton and vegetable fields. They need a lot of water because the summers are dry and hot.
— Why is the river important for our town? — Because we get drinking water from it. — Anything else? — Yes, the farmers use it, so we have fresh fruit and vegetables.
Class activity
“Water word map”: the class writes WATER on the board and each group adds three uses with a because-sentence.
