Explanation

Football, boxing, kurash, gymnastics, judo and many other sports are popular in Uzbekistan. We name the person with a suffix or a special word: swim – swimmer, box – boxer, wrestle – wrestler, gymnastics – gymnast, athletics – athlete, judo – judoka, karate – karateka; for tennis we say tennis player. A professional sportsperson does sport as a job and takes part in big competitions; an amateur does sport for fun and health. Kurash is a national style of wrestling from Uzbekistan and is now popular in many countries. Kupkari is a traditional game played on horseback. Famous names: the gymnast Oksana Chusovitina and the boxers Hasanboy Dusmatov and Fazliddin Gaibnazarov, who both won Olympic gold in Rio in 2016.
