Explanation

The apron pattern is placed on folded fabric with the grain direction and seam allowance in mind and held with pins. Its outline is traced in chalk, then the seam allowance is traced for the hem, side and bib seams. The pocket pattern is also placed on the fabric and traced with seam allowance. Before cutting check that the grain, the flowers and the seam allowance fall correctly; then cut along the line. When the pattern is separated from the cut piece, pins are put into the two layers so they do not slip. The result is 1 main piece and 2 pockets. Pass scissors closed, handle first, and keep pins in a pincushion.

Worked examples
The apron has 1 main piece and 2 pockets: 3 pieces in all.
If the pattern of the print points up, the pattern piece also goes with the top up so the print is not upside down.
Class activity

Paper-pattern game: cut a paper apron pattern (use scissors under adult supervision) and try the most economical way to lay it on a sheet representing 90 cm width.
