Sewing the one-piece apron
Baste a centre line along the middle of the cut apron; mark the pocket place with a loose basted line. Check the accuracy of the marks and the control line, then begin sewing. The apron hem can be folded, or trimmed with bias binding, lace or a ruffle. For a ruffle take a trim piece one and a half times the hem length: finish one edge with overcast stitch, run a 4 mm machine stitch on the other edge, pull the thread and gather the ruffle to the hem’s length. Put the right side of the ruffle on the right side of the hem, baste with 1 cm seam allowance, machine it, remove the basting, then turn the ruffle right side out, topstitch and press. Machine, needle, scissors and iron are used under the teacher’s supervision.
Paper ruffle: fold a 30 cm paper strip like an accordion and squeeze it to 20 cm. See how gathers look. This exercise uses no needle or scissors, so it is safe.
