Explanation

A base drawing is a drawing made with measures and formulas. Adding or removing a line to change the shape of the parts is called modelling. You can also model without changing the shape, by decorating with trim, lace, embroidery, braid or appliqué, so one pattern gives different aprons. For an apron and cap, light plain or small-flower cotton or linen is chosen, because it washes easily and irons well. When a pattern is prepared for cutting, write on it the garment name, size, number of pieces, grain direction and seam allowance. Fabric comes in widths from 40 cm to 2.80 m, so width is taken into account when working out how much to buy.

Worked examples
On the pattern write: “Apron, size 38, main piece – 1, seam allowance on side edge 1 cm”.
Rounding the pocket’s lower edge is changing a line, that is, modelling.
Class activity

Sketch: draw one apron base in 3 different trims (lace, appliqué, braid) in coloured pencils and give reasons for your favourite.
