Explanation

Soft toys can be sewn from fabric scraps and decorated with wool, leather, tape and stuffing. For the eyes and mouth the book suggests buttons, leather or oilcloth, but a toy meant for small children must have no small detachable parts because they can be swallowed; embroidering the face is safer. The body is made first: it is sewn from tightly woven, light, plain fabric and stuffed with polyester fibre or cotton. Hair is made from black wool thread and sewn or glued on (an adult uses the glue). The dress is sewn from satin or adras scraps and has an opening in the back down to the waist. The trouser hems are trimmed with tape or embroidery, and the slippers are made from black fabric.

Worked examples
Body, two legs, two arms and two slippers: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8 cut pieces.
Stuffing does not show through tightly woven cloth, but does through a loose weave.
Class activity

Design: draw your own doll in colour: hair, embroidered face, dress and slippers. Mark which parts will be embroidered and which decorated with fabric.
