Woods used in carpentry
Several tree species’ wood is used in carpentry. Poplar has the baqaterak and mirzaterak kinds: the mirzaterak has a straight trunk and gives good-quality logs. Ash wood is pale (whitish-yellow), strong and flexible, and bends well when steamed; it is used in furniture, plywood and shipbuilding. Pine wood is whitish-red, light, resinous and moisture-resistant. Beech (qoraqayin) wood has a beautiful grain but is not moisture-resistant, so bent furniture and drawing instruments are made of it. Oak wood is yellowish-brown, very strong and dense and does not rot in water, so it is used in underground construction and furniture. Plane-tree wood is tough, hard and beautifully grained; plywood and costly furniture are made from it.
Wood “passport”: each pair picks one tree and makes a card (colour, hardness, uses, a drawing). In class the cards are shuffled for a guessing game.
