Explanation

Floor coverings and furniture need minor repairs on time, following the manufacturer’s recommendations. Furniture is not recommended near heating appliances, and direct sunlight is also harmful: furniture heats, dries and loses its properties. To keep humidity normal in a room, decorative plants or an aquarium help. Plastic-covered furniture is wiped with a damp cloth and finally with a dry one, which stops moisture getting into gaps. Special products, polishes, are used for wooden surfaces; in the kitchen avoid getting them on food. Surfaces of veneer and plywood should be dusted regularly. You can fix small faults yourself: if a cupboard leans, put a cardboard or plastic pad under its leg; if the bottom of a wardrobe sags, support it with a wooden prop; loose screws and bolts in door hinges are tightened with a screwdriver. Children do not use polishes and cleaning chemicals without adults.

Worked examples
A 2 mm cardboard pad under a table leg stops it wobbling.
Hanging a curtain at a sunny window keeps the furniture varnish from fading and drying out.
Class activity

Furniture check: with an adult look over furniture at home or in class: any wobbly table or loose screw? Make a list of what to fix. Fixing is done by an adult or the teacher.
