Explanation

A metalworking workshop is a specially equipped room in which every pupil is given a permanent workplace. Only the tools needed for the lesson should lie on the workplace, because extra things get in the way. Cutting, striking, edged and measuring tools demand care, since they can injure you and the people next to you. If tools held in the right hand lie on the right and those held in the left hand lie on the left, time is saved and the work is better. At the end of the lesson tools, blanks and drawings are put away, and shavings are swept off with a brush, never with the bare hand. In the workshop nothing is touched without the teacher’s permission.

Worked examples
Two hammers, spare paper and rubbish are left on the workplace: this slows the work and is unsafe, so only the needed tool stays.
A left-handed pupil puts the measuring tool on the left, because it is easier to reach from there.
Class activity

Question game: the teacher shows a picture of the workshop or a real workplace. Pairs find 3 mistakes in a badly arranged workplace (in a picture) and say the correct order. No real tool is in pupils’ hands; the tidying exercise is done only under the teacher’s supervision with a pencil and ruler.

Practice
1
What is placed on the workplace?
2
Which side do right-hand tools go on?
3
What do we sweep shavings with?
4
Why must the workplace be tidy?
